Light
Full sun, 6β8 hours daily. Afternoon shade in very hot climates to prevent leaf scorch.
Temperature
Thrives at 25β35Β°C. Can tolerate brief dips to 5Β°C. Not frost-hardy.
Water
Water deeply 2β3 times/week in summer, reduce in winter. Keep moist but not waterlogged.
Humidity
Prefers 50β80%. Use humidity tray or mist leaves in dry indoor environments.
Pruning
Prune to shape and encourage bushy growth. Regular leaf harvesting acts as natural pruning.
Growth Rate
Moderate β 30β60 cm/year. Reaches productive maturity in 2β3 years from seed.
Soil & Water Requirements
| Parameter | Ideal Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| pH | 5.5 β 6.5 | Slightly acidic. Use sulfur to lower pH if needed. |
| Texture | Sandy loam to loam | Well-draining is essential. |
| Organic Matter | High | Mix in compost, coconut coir, or aged manure. |
| Drainage | Excellent | Root rot is the primary killer. |
πͺ΄ Premium Potting Mix
40% potting soil + 25% perlite + 20% coconut coir + 10% composted bark + 5% worm castings.
Watering Guide
- Spring/Summer: Water deeply 2β3 times per week. Allow top 2β3 cm to dry between.
- Fall/Winter: Reduce to once weekly. Let 5 cm dry between waterings.
- Overwatering signs: Yellowing leaves, mushy trunk base, fungal growth.
- Underwatering signs: Wilting, crispy leaf edges, premature leaf drop.
Propagation Methods
- Extract fresh seeds, remove white outer coat to improve germination.
- Sow 1β2 cm deep in moist seed-starting mix. Keep warm (25β30Β°C).
- Germination takes 2β8 weeks. Transplant when 2β3 true leaves appear.
- Expect fruit in 3β5 years from seed.
Take 15β20 cm semi-hardwood cuttings, dip in rooting hormone, plant in moist perlite. Keep at 25β30Β°C with high humidity. Roots develop in 6β12 weeks. Fruit in 1β2 years.
Preferred commercial method. Use rough lemon or sour orange rootstock. T-budding or cleft grafting. Success rate: 70β90%. Fruit in 1β2 years.
Select 1β2 year-old branch, make upward-angled cut, wrap in moist sphagnum moss and plastic. Roots appear in 8β16 weeks. Popular in Southeast Asian nurseries.
Pests & Diseases
Aphids
Small insects on new growth. Spray with neem oil or insecticidal soap. Introduce ladybugs.
Scale Insects
Brown/white bumps on stems. Remove by hand or treat with horticultural oil.
Spider Mites
Fine webbing and stippled leaves. Increase humidity, spray with water and neem oil.
Canker (Bacterial)
Corky lesions on leaves and fruit. Prune affected branches. No chemical cure β prevention is key.
β οΈ Prevention Tips
Regular inspection, proper spacing for airflow, avoiding overhead watering, and maintaining tree health are the best defenses.
Indoor Growing
Light
South-facing window preferred. Supplement with grow lights in winter (14β16 hours).
Temperature
Maintain 18β27Β°C. Keep away from cold drafts and heating vents.
Humidity
Use humidifier, pebble tray, or group with tropical plants. Mist 2β3 times weekly.
Pollination
Hand-pollinate with a small paintbrush or shake plant during flowering.
