The species was formally described by Swiss botanist Augustin Pyramus de Candolle in 1813. The epithet hystrix comes from the Greek word for "porcupine," referring to the tree's formidable thorns.

π¬ Genetic Complexity
Citrus taxonomy is notoriously complex. C. hystrix is believed to be an ancient hybrid, possibly between the wild mandarin (C. reticulata) and the papeda group. Recent genomic studies suggest it may have contributed genetic material to several cultivated citrus species.
Physical Description
Growth Habit
Small to medium-sized thorny evergreen tree, typically 2β6m in cultivation, occasionally reaching 11m. Dense, bushy canopy with irregular branching.
Trunk & Bark
Grayish-brown bark that becomes slightly rough with age. Young branches are green, angular, and prominently winged β a distinguishing characteristic.
Leaves
Unique unifoliate structure β the "double leaf" appearance is actually two winged petioles stacked on top of each other. Dark green, glossy, highly aromatic. 5β7.5 cm per segment.
Flowers
Small, white to creamy-white, 1.5β2.5 cm across. Usually in small clusters of 2β5. Very fragrant. Bloom year-round in tropical climates.
Fruit
Spherical to oval, 3β4 cm diameter, with a bumpy, wrinkled rind. Dark green unripe, yellow-green when ripe. Thick rind (up to 5mm) is extremely aromatic. Interior is pale green and very sour.
Seeds
Usually 10β12 seeds per fruit. White to pale green, ovoid, slightly polyembryonic. Germination rate: 60β75% under favorable conditions.
The Unique Leaf Structure

The kaffir lime leaf is one of the most unusual in the plant kingdom. What appears to be two leaves stacked end-to-end is actually a winged petiole with a true leaf blade at the tip. The "wing" is so large and leaf-like that it has its own veins and photosynthetic tissue, creating the appearance of a double leaf.
Native Habitat & Distribution
The kaffir lime is native to tropical Southeast Asia, specifically Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and the Philippines. It grows wild in lowland and mid-elevation tropical forests.
Natural Range
Indonesia
Likely center of origin. Jeruk purut is ubiquitous in Indonesian cuisine. Grows wild in Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and Sulawesi.
Malaysia
Called limau purut. Integral to Malay, Nyonya, and Rendang preparations. Native to Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo.
Thailand
Known as makrut (ΰΈ‘ΰΈ°ΰΈΰΈ£ΰΈΉΰΈ). One of the "holy trinity" of Thai aromatics alongside galangal and lemongrass.
Cambodia & Laos
Called kroei in Khmer. Essential in curries, soups, and fish preparations.
Global Cultivation
Now grown in Florida, Hawaii, Australia, Northeast India, and parts of the Caribbean and Central America.
